The concrete condo balcony is an unattractive cold space. Not any longer. The GRATEDEX® Outdoor Floor System® provides the ultimate upgrade without bonding to the concrete.
No, this is not the common snapping tile squares. Instead, GRATEDEX® provides a platform for a custom tile selection specific to the customer or to the building architecture. This makes possible both expanded creativity in tile material type, size and colors at a reasonable cost/value. Here for example is an installation at a high-rise condo in the Chicago area along the shore of Lake Michigan.
This install used the GRATEDEX® GX11. It uses a propriatry design that floats our structural flooring system over any load bearing balcony structure including concrete, or wood framed with or without waterproofing. This is a light weight assembly at around 10 psf including the stone or tile surface. The structural Deck Planks or panels are supported by small 3"+ support plates. Once all of the panels are in place, the stone is buttered with our Hold-Tite® adhesive, bonding the tile to the Deck Plank.

At this condo unit, the customer selected a custom pattern of granite tiles, creating a fine dinning experience with a view. The installation was simple and efficient and required no preparation to the concrete balcony surface and leaves no damage to the concrete balcony when it needs to be removed.
For this building, the design management has found this to be so successful that over the past 5+ years, a half dozen or more units have had there balconies customized with the GRATEDEX® solution and the customers stone selecton with zero failures in the cold climate conditions. The installations have been so successful that the upgrades continue year after year.
